Sourcing outside genetics which will compliment the goals of the Nikau flock can be a challenge as many stud flocks have a reliance on high input. I have experimented with some Perendale genetics, using a couple of Russell Proffits Raupuha Perendale rams. Russell is doing a good job with his stud, running it extensively with low drench input, selecting for good feet and mouths and has been put a strong focus on FE. These sires I used were tested at .6 mg/kg. FE Gold Status. This gives me confidence that i wouldn't lose FE tolerance introducing these genetics.
The ewe hoggets which scanned in lamb have been retained and are being selected on mothering ability and temperament. They were mated to Coopworth rams and the progeny , at 3/4 Coopworth, will be screened back into the stud flock based on performance.
My crossbred sheep are recorded in my second flock Nikau B . SIL flock number 2325
